Thigh muscles. Computer artwork of an anterior view of some of the muscles and tendons (red and white) of the thighs and their attachment to the bones of the leg. The muscles shown are the vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis muscles, which lie in the middle, lateral and medial areas of the thigh. Used to extend (straighten) the knee, they form part of the quadriceps femoris muscle group. All three attach at their upper ends to the femur and at their lower ends to the tibia via the patellar ligament and the kneecap (patella, bottom). At left are joint ligaments (white) in the knee and hip.
