Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: an angel sent by God swoops low over the sleeping and dreaming Joseph to tell him that his wife, Mary, will bear a child - Jesus Christ - conceived by the Holy Spirit. This superbly composed Romanesque representation of The Dream of Saint Joseph was carved in about 1190 AD by a sculptor known as The Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Aguero. It is one of 20 capitals in the monastery's cloistered courtyard, all carved by the same hand, that together comprise a pictorial Bible, relating biblical events from the Creation to the Ascension of Christ through scenes drawn from both the Old and New Testaments. The Benedictine monastery was founded in the 10th century under a bulging rock overhang in the Sierra de la Peña range of the Central Pyrenees by hermit monks fleeing the expanding Moorish territories in southern Spain. It stands on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
