Pashas and beys, foreign ambassadorsand diplomats, ministers and high dignitaries of stateare all on hand in full regalia, with o-litterin- uniformsand a profusion of gold lace and decorative orders, while magnificently mounted squadrons of lancers andcavalry are marching to position. About p. m. alleyes are eagerly directed toward the Yildiz Palace, asit is time for the Sultan to appear. Then, high abovethe heads of the mighty throng, rings out from theslender minaret of Hamadieh the impressive voice ofthe green-turbaned vniczzin. Presently the iron gatesof the palace open, and the Sultan emerges from hisseclusion in an open carriage drawn by Arabian steeds, and dashes down the little slope that leads from thepalace to the mosque. At sight of the Sultan thesoldiers present arms and with one voice shout aloudthree times, like the booming of a cannon : Padisha-. 242 THE TURK AND THE LAND OF HAIG. him chok yaslia! which means, Long live my Sul-tan! Then regimental bands burst out in martialmusic. Before the appearance of the Sultans carriage,a few veiled women of his harem, young sons, and malerelatives proceed to the courtyard of the mosque. Inmarked contrast to the gorgeous attire of the imperialprinces and other high dignitaries, Abdul-Hamid is veryplainly dressed in a black suit and a red fez. Nor isthe contrast less marked between him and Osman Pasha, the hero of Plevna, a brave figure of hardy and robustmanhood, who sits opposite the thin and pale Sultan inthe royal carriage. After half an hour at prayer Abdul-Hamid reappears in an open landau. He takes thereins of the horses in his own hands, and drives backup the hill to the palace, while many courtiers follow onfoot, to come to his aid if needed. Cheers and music, pomp and show follow him
