Olinthus Gregory, English Mathematician


Olinthus Gilbert Gregory (January 29, 1774 - February 2, 1841) was an English mathematician, author and editor. In 1793 he published a treatise, Lessons Astronomical and Philosophical. In 1796, he became an editor on the Cambridge Intelligencer, and then opened a booksellers shop. In 1802 he obtained an appointment as mathematical master at the Royal Military Academy on the strength of his manuscript on the Use of the Sliding Rule. In 1807 he became a full professor. His books include, Mathematics for Practical Men (1825), and Hints for the Use of Teachers of Elementary Mathematics (1840). He was also one of the founders of the Royal Astronomical Society. Failing health obliged him to retire in 1838, and he died in 1841 at the age of 67.
