Count Von Bernstorff, Ambassador From Germany, Washington DC, 1917. First World War: Johann Heinrich von Bernstorff was German ambassador to the United States from 1908 to 1917. He left the US on 3 February 1917, after President Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic relations with Germany.
