Poppy seed head. The seed head or seed capsule of the poppy (Papaver sp.) comprises the remains of the flower after the petals have fallen. When the capsule has fully ripened, mature seeds are released by the organised process of dehiscence (dehydration and spliting). At this time the pericarp, the capsule wall, is dead and hard.
