Ludwig Prandtl (1875-1953), German engineer. Prandtl pioneered the science of aerodynamics, making enormous advances in the study of streamlining, friction and wing design. He showed that small models of aircraft could be used to direct the design of full-size machines. In 1909 he was instrumental in the construction of the first German wind tunnel. He also researched airflow at supersonic speeds.
