Speicherstadt. Granary-Town in Hamburg. Secret entrance.
The "Speicherstadt" (Storehouse City) was built in 1885-88, as part of Hamburg's newly created freeport. 20,000 people had to leave their homes to make room for the new commerce facilities. All storehouses here have direct access to transport barges approaching on the channels at their waterfront side and land street access at their other side. The "Speicherstadt" magazines are in use for storage of coffee, cacao, tee and spices up to the present day. About one third of the world carpet production is being handled here. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten sind durch die Containerisierung des Warenverkehrs Speicher frei geworden. Hier fanden High-Tech-Firmen ebenso wie Handelsfirmen einen neuen Sitz.
