Bodh Gaya is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site in India, known for the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment.

The largest group of Buddhist followers visiting Bodhgaya are the Ambedkar Buddhists, a movement of lower caste groups from the states of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. There are about 7 million Ambedkar Buddhists in India.
