It shows members of the 306th Infantry, Company M, being sent out on patrols to locate German positions, while German shells burst in the distance. The soldiers belonged to the 77th Division, mainly consisting of men from the metropolitan portion of New York and trained at Camp Upton, New York, on Long Island. The location of the photograph is between Vauxcere and Longueval, Aisne, France.
