The sows tushes are as large asthose of an Indian boar and project 3 to 4 inches from the lip. The largeboars are found solitary, and also with the sounder. Though a formidable-looking beast, he is an inoffensive animal and does not, I am told, chargewhen ridden with the spear. I have seen the wart-hog moving about at alltimes of the day ; the largest sounder I saw consisted of eight individuals. Fig. 49.—Wart-hog sp. If you shoot a wart-hog you have to cut off the head, carry ithome and clean it yourself, as the Somalis will not touch one at any price, pigbeing abhorrent to staunch Mohammedans. The wart-hog is fairly plenti-ful both at the base of the Golis range and on the plateau to the south ofthose hills. They are not difficult to stalk, and in most places the ground isquite easy riding. When ridden I have heard they sometimes disappear into a hole in the ground, backing in stern foremost.
