Tyler was born at Beaconsfield. Ontariorounty. New York. April 24, 1819. When eight years ofige his parents removed to Ravenna, Ohio. He was edu-cated in the common schools of that city and at Granvillerollege. In the year 1845 he entered the service of the\merican Fur Company and while in its employ traveledextensively in Ohio. Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee,md Virginia. He joined the militia of his native State, and was pro-noted rapidly to the position of brigadier-general, which he^as holding at the breaking out of the war of the was elected colonel of the Seventh Regiment O. V. 7. 1861. and in June his regiment was ordered to WestVirginia. where he captured $40,000 at Weston. He participated in the battles
