Lisa M. Nowak, American astronaut, 2005. Nowak, born 1963, was selected by NASA in 1996 and qualified as a mission specialist in robotics. She crewed the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-121 mission in July 2006, where she was responsible for operating the robotic arms of the shuttle and the International Space Station. In 2007, she was arrested in Florida, and later charged with the attempted kidnapping of Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman, who was romantically involved with astronaut William Oefelein. In 2009, Nowak pleaded guilty to various charges. She was dismissed from NASA and from the Navy.
