Egyptian goddess, wearing on her head a sun disk between the horns of a cow, nurses her son, the infant Horus.

The Egyptian goddess Isis in this sculpture is shown wearing on her head a sun disk between the horns of a cow. The symbolism is that it represents the sistrum, a musical instrument that the goddess Hathor, with whom isis is often identified, usually carries. Isis nurses her son, the infant Horus (at first a sky god, then worshoped as a sun god) This type of statuary often represented the ruling queen at the time; so, for this reason, she wears the uraeus, the rearing cobra right above her brow. Isis was one of Egypt's most important deities. The photograph dates to 1907.
