It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The range was established in 1872 when the New York Legislature and the National Rifle Association (NRA) combined to acquire 70 acres of land for long-distance rifle shooting and competitions. The Irish Rifle team (British champions) challenged the NRA to a rifle-shooting match at Creedmoor in 1874. The local ‘Amateur Rifle Club’ accepted the challenge and won.

The range was established in 1872 after the New York Legislature and the newly formed National Rifle Association (NRA) combined to acquire 70 acres of farmland for long-distance rifle shooting and competitions. It officially opened the next year. The Irish Rifle team, who were British champions, challenged the NRA to a rifle-shooting match at Creedmoor in 1874. The local ‘Amateur Rifle Club’ accepted the challenge and won by a small margin. The Leech Cup was presented by Major Arthur Leech, Captain of the Irish team – it is the oldest trophy in competitive target shooting in the USA. The Creedmoor site reverted to the State of New York in 1907 and in 1912 became the Farm Colony of Brooklyn State Hospital. Today it is the site of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
