Of these the earlier ones aredivided horizontally in the centre, and it is the upperpart of the page that contains the picture illustrativeof some Old Testament event. The lower part rep-resents a corresponding scene from the New Testarment. Further on in the volume, three pictures ap-pear in the upper part of the page, and three pages at the end of the volume aredevoted to depicting the Uves of Jesus Christ and theBlessed Virgin. It must not be supposed that these were the onlyBibles of this class that existed in the Middle the contrary, from the great number of copiesthat have survived to our own day we may guesshow wide their circulation must have been. Wehave a MS. existing in the British Museum ^) entitled Figures de la Bible consistmg of. PICTURE BIBLEPROPHECY OF ISAIAH, LIII AND LIV, REGARDING JESUS CHRIST AND THE CHURCH ItEPnoDUCED FnOM ORIGINAL IX HIDLIOTIIEtiUE NATIONALE. (MS. Latin 115G0, F. 124) TAniS BIBLIA 547 BIBLIA pictures illustrating events in the Bible with shortdescriptive text. This is of the end of the thirteenth,or the beginning of the fourteenth, century. Of thesame date is the Historia Bibliee metrice which ispreserved in the same library and, as the name im-plies, has a metrical text. But we have specimens ofmanuscript illustrated Bibles of earlier date. Suchis the Bible preserved in the library of St. Pauls, outside the walls of Rome; that of the AmiensLibrary (MS. 108), and that of the Royal Library ofThe Hague (MS. 69). So numerous are the sur-viving relics of such Bibles, back even so far as theeleventh and twelfth centuries, that it may be safel
