There are storedhere at all times 350 empty grain cars,of which are coopered. Besides thisyard, we have some cars stored at theWolf Lake and at the 90th Street Yards,South Chicago, these two latter beingsimilarly equipped. Quick or small grainorders [ire supplied from one of these twoyards, which are all fully equipped forminute car inspection and repairing, sothat when a car leaves any of our yards,. R. R. When our grain cars anixc al I heelevators (all of which ai-e located ontracks of the various Belt and connectinglines), they are again inspected by in-spectors of the line the elevator is locatedujion, and then by coopers of the Coop-erage Bureau. As these inspections mustb(^ made before a car is placed imder theelevator for loading, it can readily be seen that a graincar nmst be agood car. As aspeaker oncesaid at a jointmeeting of rail-road officials andthe employes ofthe Weighingand CooperageBureaus, Agrain car in thefreight businessis analogous to aPullman passen-ger car in thepassenger de-partment. Distributionof Cars The de])art-ment of the cardistributer hasbecome one ofthe main factoi*sin the handlingof grain ship-ments. A sys-tem has been putinto effect where-by grain ordersfrom connectingrailroads and elevators are filled in thespeediest mann
