Clubmoss stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a Lycopodium sp. clubmoss plant. The stem has an outer epidermis and cuticle containing stomata (pores). The inner cortex is made of sclerenchyma cells, the middle cortex parenchyma cells, and the inner cortex thick-walled sclerenchyma cells. The central stele (dark, circular) has an outer ring (endodermis, dark blue) and an inner pericycle (dark blue). The xylem consists of thick-walled tracheids, with outer protoxylem (red) and inner metaxylem (yellow). In-between the xylem is the phloem (dark blue). Magnification: x5 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
