STORM IN A SCALLOP SHELL BY SCALLOP WITH WORDS FROM PETER GRIMES I HEAR THOSE VOICES THAT WILL NOT BE DROWNED BY INTERNATIONALLY RESPECTED ARTIST AND SCULPTOR MAGGIE HAMBLING A MEMORIAL TO BENJAMIN BRITTEN ON THE BEACH IN BRITTEN S HOME TOWN OF ALDEBURGH SUFFOLK ENGLAND AND WHICH THE LOCAL TOWNSFOLK WANT REMOVED AFTER ONLY BEING ERECTED THREE WEEKS AGO IN DECEMBER 2003 COPYRIGHT PHOTOGRAPH AND WORDS BY 9 1 2004 BRITTENS WORKS INCLUDE THE OPERAS BILLY BUDD AND PETER GRIMES WHICH INCLUDES FOUR SEA INTERLUDES SOME OF BRITTENS MOST EMOTIVE MUSIC FROM GRIMES AND SET ON THE BLEAK SUFFOLK COAST 700 OF THE TOWNSFOLK OF ALDEBURGH HAVE SIGNED A PETITION TO HAVE THE MEMORIAL MOVED ACCORDING TO MRS JACKI McNEILL EDITOR OF THE ALDEBURGH GAZETTE IT IS FELT BY MANY THAT BENJAMIN BRITTEN WOULD HAVE HATED A MEMORIAL TO HIM THAT SPOILT SUCH A WONDERFUL STRETCH OF BEACH IT STANDS AS A MONUMENT TO THE EGO OF THE PEOPLE WHO PUT IT THERE MEMBERS OF OLD FISHING FAMILIES WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOR HUNDEDS OF YEARS ARE ASKING WHAT THE HELL HAS A SCALLOP SHELL TO DO WITH ALDEBURGH WE VE NEVER FISHED SCALLOPS HERE SOME LOCALS HAVE CALLED IT A RUPTURED TURKEY IN ITS DEATH THROWS OTHERS HAVE SAID IT LOOKS LIKE AN ANCIENT WORRIER ON A CAMEL WITH A SPEAR WHILE YET ANOTHER CALLED IT THE SCALLOP OF THE EAST ALLUDING TO THE ANGEL OF THE NORTH BY ANTHONY GORMLEY
