He excavatedfrom the top until he arrived at a slope, which bysteps had led down to a massive stone door towardsthe centre of the hillock ; this he broke, and beholdhe had gained the wished-for prize ! I think therewere no steps remaining by which we could descend,for we scrambled down as we might have doneinto some old Derbyshire mine, and entered by asort of rude arch into a vaulted portico.
