Wholestatuette makes an extremely attractive piece. Height, lSyt inches, 395—Soft Ivory-white Bottle (Kang Hsi) Globular body curving to a long slender and gently taper-ing neck. Hard white porcelain, which is incised with verydelicate ornament, and at mouth, separate bands of scrollsand scepter-head; ornament commences immediately underbands and continues down neck to over shoulder in flowingfloral pattern. The paste is shown in the margin of thebase, which is glazed, and bears the Ming six-charactersmark. Height, 11 inches. Height. W\L cream-white. The goddess isseated on open rockwork, withone foot doubled under robe andhands resting on other knee, inone band is the sacred scroll. Onpart of rock is the bundle ofsacred hooks. Kuan-yin, by onetradition, is said to have beenthe daughter of a legendary king,and, by another, to be the Chi-nese version of the Buddhist Ava-lokitesvara; the deity is repre-sented in many shapes but usuallyas shown in the figures in thi>collection.
