MARIE JACKSON AT PINEWOOD NURSERY NEAR SLOUGH ON MONDAY 8TH NOV CHECKING THIS YEARS CROP OF POINSETTIAS.

Shoppers could struggle to find a British poinsettia this year due to a SHORTAGE of the popular red Christmas plant. Families should start buying the flaming red pot plants now as supermarkets and garden centres are likely to run out of home-grown poinsettias. Demand for British poinsettias is always high because the festive flowers are better quality and longer-lasting than those grown on the continent. But many UK farmers have stopped growing the plants because of high heating and growing costs. "There are less growers in this country now as many smaller independent farmers are struggling to make it financially viable," said Marie Jackson, 29, co-director of the family-run Pinewood Nurseries in Stoke Pogess, Bucks. "If people want a British poinsettia they should get one soon before supplies run out as there will only be a limited amount available this year."
