GREAT NATIONAL HEROES 89 They became the Empress and Consort of the Emperor graves are reputed to be at Hsiang Shan, an island inthe Tung-ting lake of Hunan. The Emperor Shih Huangof the Chin dynasty is said to have been driven by a strong windon the island while attempting to cross the lake. He becamevery angry and ordered all the trees and shrubs on the island to. Fig. 26. Hsiang Chun be destroyed, thus turning the green hillsides to a dull brown{che ch^i shan). (4) Ssu Ming is the arbiter of life and death, the assistantof High Heaven in controlling human events, the protector ofvirtue and enemy of evil. In this elegy Ssu Ming is dividedinto two beings, one senior and one junior, thus giving rise tothe wrong interpretation that the two stellar deities Shang Taiand Wen Chang are referred to. The division into senior andjunior arbiters is probably a poetic licence, in the same way, as 90 CHINESE MYTHOLOGY Hsiang Chiin is separated from Hsiang Fu-jen in this elegy, though they are usually joined together under the one termHsiang Chiin. (5) Tung Chiin is the god of the sun rising in the East. (6) Ho Po is god of the Yellow River, according to thestatement of Chuang Tzu. He has the form of a man. Thisname seems interchangeable with that of the god of the waters,
