Thousands of protestors marching down Lewisham Hight Street, towards Lewisham Hospital as part of a large demonstration against the proposed closure of Lewisham Hospiital A&E Dept. Many thousands of people turned out for this march on a cold and rainy day! In July, Tory Health Minister Andrew Lansley MP hand-picked a ‘special administrator’ to take over South London Healthcare Trust. The administrator, , has completed a draft report recommending that Lewisham Hospital close their A&E Department, impose £39million of staff cuts and sell off 60% of hospital buildings to developers. Lewisham residents, hospital workers and MPs have come together to fight against plans to close Lewisham Hospital A&E Department and cuts to maternity services. Lewisham is bigger than the cities of Brighton or Hull, as are Greenwich and Bexley. Three boroughs with a population of 750,00 cannot be expected to have only 1 admitting hospital. And without an A&E, maternity services at Lewisham may be closed for safety reasons when the report is finalised, but the administrator refuses to acknowledge this. He will have taken a new job by the time this plan could cost us our Maternity Unit.
