FLETCHER, John, an eminent Englishdramatic writer, was the son of RichardFletcher, bishop of London : he was born inNorthamptonshire in 1576, anil received hiseducation at Cambridge. It is not known thathe followed any profession, except thatpoet, in which capacity he was the inseparablepartner of Francis Beaumont (see his article),insomuch that their names are rarely mentionedbut in conjunction. He is also said to havewritten a comedy in partnership with B. Jon-son. After the death of Beaumont, Fletcheris supposed to have consulted James Shirley onthe plots of several of his plays. He died ofthe plague in 1625, and was buried in thechurch of St. Mary Overy. Differ
