During his School and Collegecareer he was a notable Rugby forward, and heserved in U Company while at the Univer-sity. He graduated (Agr.) in 1911. Aftergraduation he spent a time gaining experiencein Canada and then acted as an AssistantCounty Organizer, North of Scotland College ofAgriculture. He was appointed AgriculturalLecturer and Superintendent of the State Ex-perimental Farm, Jersey, in 1913. On the outbreak of war Johnston obtained acommission with the Jersey Militia, but his. 26 IN ardent spirit and high sense of duty led him toseek service with a fighting unit. Despite ob-jections and difficulties raised by authorities inJersey, who wished to retain his services in theisland, with the help of the Governor, he trans-ferred with the Foreign Service Company of theMilitia to the Royal Irish Rifles, with which heserved first in Ireland and then in England. Heproceeded to France in 1915 and was killed inaction at Hulluch on 3 April 1916.
