Here are kept, in capa-cious rooms, given and fitted up for the purpofe,the Bofton Library, and the valuable collections ofthe Hiftorical Society. Moft of the public build-ings are handfome, and fome of them are elegant;particularly the new State Houfe, erected on thefouth fide of Beacon Hill, fronting the Mall, thecorner ftone of which was laid with great formalityand parade on the 4th of July, 1795. This build-ing overtops the monument on Beacon Hill, andis one of the moft elegant in the United [The. The dome, 50 feet diameter and 30 feet high, isterminated with an elegant circular lanthorn, fup-porting a gilt pine cone, an emblem of one of ourprincipal ftaples. The ftairs are fpacious, and two flights of themlead to the top of the outer dome, 170 fteps fromthe foundation. This flight affords an uninter-rupted view of one of the fineft fcenes in , the beauty and advantages of this fituationwhich induced the Legiflature to make choice of itfor the prefent building, are acknowledged by bothnatives and foreigners. It vies with the moft pic-turefque fcenes in Europe, and will bear compari-fon with the Caftle Hill of Edinburgh, the famousBay of Naples, or any other moft commandingprofpect.
