Nature, at tlie time the first Euro-peans came, had asserted her original dominion over the earth; theforests were all in their full luxuriance, the growth of many cen-turies; and naught existed to point out who and what they werewho formerly lived, and loved, and labored, and died, on the conti-nent of America.
