CORRESPONDENCE HOUSE SHOEING AND THE HOBSE OWNER Stb,—Your correspondent who signs himself A Lover of Horses has read into my remarksmuch more than I intended them to readers of this paper will have noticedthat I habitually stand up for the useful crafts-man who shoes horses. He is underpaid, over-worked, and unappreciated for an amount ofskill which he usually possesses, and which is notknown or seen by the average horse is dangerous work; it is heavy and dirtyand skilful, and should therefore be much betterremunerated than it is, even now that the shame-ful rates of pay have been increased. There are, of course, in this trade, as in allothers, some men more skilful and painstakingthan otheTs, and some few remain who have nottaken advantage of theoretical instruction, butthey grow less numerous every year, and theirplaces are taken by better educated and mentallydeveloped youngsters.
