Obesity research. Researcher analysing rat fat cells under a microscope. This research has shown that the size of fat cells in offspring is influenced by maternal obesity. Rats that were born to obese mothers put on more weight when exposed to high-fat foods than those born to normal weight mothers. This occurred even when the offspring were brought up away from their obese parent, showing that there is a genetic component to the young rats' obesity. This research is looking into the implications of these findings for humans. Photographed at the ARS (Agricultural Research Service) Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center, Little Rock, USA.
