Oocyte in resting stage. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary, showing an oocyte in the dictyate or dictyotene resting stage. It is seen within a cluster of surrounding cells called the cumulus oophorus. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). A woman's supply of ova start developing at the time the ovaries form in the foetus during pregnancy. They remain in this resting state until hormones prompt further development when sexual maturity is reached. Magnification: x460 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
