That night he was put into thecommon jail among the other prisoners, where he slept little, butspent the night in prayer. On the next day he was led to the placeof burning in a park without the city. He had but an old gown andshirt to wear, and was barefooted, and he often fell flat on the ground,and prayed. When he was come near to the place, the officer, who was appointedto see the execution done, cried out that the prisoner was one of thosewho marred the queens realm with false doctrine and heresy, where. To this Saunders answered, It is not I, nor my fellow-preachers ofGods truth, that have hurt the queens realm, but it is yourself, andsuch as you, who have always resisted Gods holy word; it is you whohave, and who do mar the queens realm. I maintain no heresies; butthe doctrine of God, the blessed Gospel of Christ, that I hold to, thatI believe, that I have taught, and that will I never revoke. Then cried the officer, Away with him !
