Theforamina for the exit of the terminal branches of the threedivisions of the fifth, or trifacial, nerve have passing throughthem the corresponding arteries and veins. The situation ofthese vessels is important, because flaps should be cut so as tomaintain when possible the integrity of these nerves and of these nerves usually is not of grave importance becausethe lesion produces merely a paralysis of sensation, which maybe only temporary. Division of the artery may in some caseslead to sloughing of an important part of the flap. This is notof very common occurrence, because of the rich anastomosis ofvessels in the facial Fie. 6.— Hyoid or lingual bone. (From Cunningham.)
