Echovirus type 12 with host receptor molecules, computer model. Echoviruses are related to poliovirus. They are usually harmless but can cause serious illness such as encephalitis, meningitis, heart and liver disease. Echovirus type 12 (pink and white) gains entry into cells by binding onto a host protein receptor known as decay accelerating factor (DAF, purple). This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Cryo-electron microscopy uses multiple angled beams of electrons to image specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The resulting 'slices' of data are reconstructed into 3-D models on computer.
