The Hagia Sophia was built as the new Cathedral of Constantinople by the Emperor Justinian in the early 6th century AD. Istanbul`s Ottoman rulers turned it into a mosque and it is now a museum. Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture.
