Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, Rosebank, Staten Island, New York
This Gothic Revival house was built ca. 1840 in the Rosebank section of Staten Island. Inventor Antonio Meucci (1808–89) and his wife Esther rented the cottage in 1850. Meucci developed an acoustic version of the telephone in 1834 and electromagnetic telephones as early as 1849. From 1851 until 1853, the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–82) stayed here as Meucci’s guest. He would later return to Italy to lead the fight for unification. The house was moved to its present location in 1907. It opened as a museum in 1956 and is an official New York City landmark. The Antonio Meucci Memorial in front of the house was erected in 1923.
