Crooked tree branch log lying on wet, summer sunset beach sand, some distance out from the coastline at Fairhaven, Lytham St Annes, looking south across the River Ribble Estuary towards Southport. The tidal range on the beach varies. An 8 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind. A high tide approaching 10 metres, in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline (behind the camera), leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reaches of the River Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. This branch stayed for a few weeks before being washed onto an area of salt-marsh (behind the camera), where it was cut up. Others may be washed away.
