View NE of St Laurence's (St Lawrence's) Church, Longney, Gloucestershire, England, UK: mainly C13th. Lower stages of S tower C14th, upper stage & S porch added in C15th. Tower & porch have embattled parapets, the tower has large gargoyles above the Perpendicular windows of the belfry. There is a scratch dial (mass dia) facing S on the SW corner buttress of the nave. Saxon thegn Ailsi (Eilsi) was lord of Longney until 1086/7. He built a church here & asked St Wulfstan of Worcester to consecrate it. Wulfstan knew that Ailsi held riotous parties in the churchyard & sat beneath a large nut tree eating, drinking & gambling. Wulfstan said before consecration the tree must be cut down as it was depriving the new church of light, Ailsi refused, so Wulfstan cursed the tree which died from the root & had to be cut down. Ailsi later declared that "there was nothing more bitter than Wulfstan's curse; nothing sweeter than Wulfstan's blessing."
