This illustration from early World War I has the caption: Russian regiment storming the stronghold of Josepovo. The attackers encounterd great barricades of logs and rocks so placed that they could be cut loose to slide down the embankment like avalanches. Hundreds of men were crushed, but the regiment swept on to the top and captured the fort.
