Genetic research. Scientist examining DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) fragments (pink bands) on an agarose gel. A chemical in the gel causes the DNA fragments to fluoresce under ultraviolet light (UV). The gel shows an analysis of DNA samples. DNA fragments in each sample have been separated by electrophoresis. This technique separates fragments of differing sizes by the application of an electric current across the gel. DNA is the genetic material that contains the information necessary for the development and functioning of every living organism.
