This was commonly known as the IndianRoad, and for nearly the whole distance it was on the bordersof or in Vermont. The raids from Canada led to the estab-lishment of Vermonts first settlement, Fort Dummer, in thesouthern part of what is now Brattleboro. The fort was builtby Massachusetts, and was named in honor of that colonyslieutenant governor.
