Eachco-operating party to the agreement furnished trained special-ists for particular phases of the investigations and the work,begun in 1911, lias been continued under annual ratificationsof the initial agreement. A general survey of the State hasbeen made by districts and several special problems have beenstudied in detail and the data thus obtained have been pub-lished in bulletins issued from time to time as the work prog-ressed. The object of this bulletin is to abstract and summarizethe district reports so as to compare mining practice in thedifferent districts and to make generalizations on the practiceof the State as a whole. The need for such a summary bulle-tin is emphasized by the many requests for earlier districtreports which are now out of print. In order to make the bulletin more valuable to those in-terested in coal mining in Illinois an historical chapter on theeconomic development of the industry has been included anda bibliography o
