The laying of an improved granite pavement on Broad-way, Borough of Brooklyn, New York City, involved anumber of interesting constructive features. Chief ofthese was the use of a steam shovel for ripping up theold wood block pavement and the 5-in. concrete base. The shovel, which was manufactured by the KeystoneDriller Co., of Beaver Falls, Pa., has a V2-yd. bucket and aboom so placed that it can be lowered parallel to theground. The bucket slid along the boom and scooped up. steam Shovel Excavating Pavement and Concrete Base. the wood blocks and loaded them into dump wagons. Theconcrete base was handled in the same way. The shovel, despite many delays due to traffic conditions, removedabout 700 sq! yd. of blocks per day. On the concrete baseit averaged from 500 to 700 sq. yd. of concrete base. Theoperating force consisted of an engineer and fireman; anda foreman and two laborers. The latter were employed inlaying plank for the shovel to move over under its ovmpower and for leveling up. The shovel was followed by a gang of laborers whobrought the street to the required grade, which was about3 in. below the old one. This grade was then compactedby a 10-ton steam roller and the 6-in. concrete baseplaced, the mixing being done by a Koehring paver. Theblocks were laid on a 1-in. sand cushion. The blocks wereof the latest improved smooth head %-in. joint type, 3%in. to 41/4 in. wide, 4% in. to 51/4 in. deep and 8 to 12in. long. No pea
