There arc about 900 knownspecies, but the family is mostly confined to warm countries; onlya single cicad is found in England, and that is restricted to the Fulgoridae and Membracidac are two allied families most ofwhose members are also natives of hot regions. The Fidgorida<i 262 HEMLOCK have the head with two ocelli and three-segmented feelers; frequentlyas in the tropical lantern-flies () the head is prolonged into aconspicuous bladder, or trunk-like process. The Membracidae areremarkable on account of the backward prolongation of the pronotum.
