Williamsburg was then the seatof the Colonial Court, and it was the obodeof splendor. Young Jefferson, who was then 17years old, lived somewhat expensively, keeping finehorses, and much caressed by gay society, yet hewas earnestly devoted to his studies, and irreproacha-able in his morals.
