Ineach year he would present the queen with agold cross for herself, and with some fortybound volumes, more or less, of his books forher to award to her fellows at her will andpleasure. Mr. Faunthorpe cheerfully undertookthe organization of the scheme, which was firstcarried out in i88i,and has since been con-tinued year by year. The queens gown, for one thing,has been altered two or three times. Miss KateGreenaway designed one, but Mr. Ruskin didnot like it; it was a mere robe, he said, andmade its wearer look like Madge new gown has been designed by , and when Mr. Ruskin sees it, will,let us hope, meet with greater acceptance. Thecross, too, is of different workmanship eachyear, being designed sometimes by Mr. Burne-Jones, sometimes by Mr. Arthur Severn, some-times by other artists. One year the cross wascomposed out of a wild rose, and Mr. Ruskincomplained because there was no thorn, as ifa true queens crown could ever be without itsthorn. But in all essentials the May QueenFestival at Whitelands has been the same fromyear to year; and the following account ofthe ceremony in 1885, written at the time, mays
