Spirit of Canberra, solar car, taking part in the 1996 World Solar Challenge. Every three years, solar cars compete in this challenge to cross Australia from north to south. The route, from Darwin to Adelaide along the Stuart Highway, covers 3000 kilometres. Spirit of Canberra came 16th in the 1996 competition in 67 hours and 15 minutes, at an average speed of kilometres per hour. Solar cars are designed to run on electricity produced by solar panels powered by sunlight.
