Before computers there were typewriters. Word processing programs were originally written to emulate them. To go down a line the large leaver on the right was used. Each key had a capital and lower case letter. You pressed the shift key to shift up to the capital. The keys were arranged in the QWERTY pattern to slow typists down. If they went too fast the keys stuck together
