Means was a farmer by vocation and hewas engaged in that line of endeavor in Illinoisat the inception of the Civil war. He tendered hisservices in defense of the nations integrity, by enlist-ing as a private in Company F, One Hundred andSixteenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, with which heproceeded to the front and with which he serveduntil his deatH. He died at Youngs Point. Mis-sissippi, on the 25th of June, 1863, while with hisregiment, which was participating in the siege ofVicksburg, and thus he sacrificed his life in the I.
