Coffee and cocoa powder. The coffee jar (upper left) contains dried grounds prepared from roasted beans of the coffee plant (Coffea sp.). The bean contain the stimulant drug caffeine. This, and other soluble chemicals, are extracted from the grounds using hot water, and drunk as a beverage (lower left). Cocoa powder (upper right) is obtained from the cocoa bean of the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The bean contains the stimulant drug theobromine. Cocoa powder is added to hot water, sometimes with milk, to prepare the beverage known as hot chocolate (lower right). Both caffeine and theobromine are derived from the purine base xanthine.
